What Are Locations & How They Work
In Marvel Snap, each match takes place across three Locations. These have special effects that significantly alter the dynamics of the game. You start with one location visible on turn one, then the second reveals on turn two, and the third on turn three.
Locations can do things like:
- Restrict certain energy-cost cards from being played there. (e.g. The Big House forbids 4-, 5-, 6-cost cards)
- Alter or delay On Reveal or Ongoing effects.
- Shuffle or move cards, change hand contents, increase or decrease power under conditions, or cause extra effects after certain turns.
Because Locations shape what you’ll be able to do in a match (particularly mid- and late-game), reading them well is essential.
Featured Locations & Hot Locations: What They Are & When They Occur
- Featured Locations are newer or special Locations that are given a higher chance to appear (e.g. ~40% increased appearance) for a period (often 48 hours).
- Hot Locations are regular locations, but for a short window (usually 24 hours) they appear more often (often ~60% higher chance) than normal.
- These events often happen on fixed schedules. Players often plan decks around them to get an advantage.
Strategies to Build & Adapt Decks to Location Effects
Deck Adjustments Based on the Location
- If two of the three Locations favor low-cost or many cards (e.g. cards that give +power per card, ongoing buffs, or cheap On Reveal), lean a deck with many 1-cost / 2-cost cards and cards that scale with quantity.
- If locations include effects that punish or limit low-cost cards (e.g. The Big House, or locations that ban/destroy low cost or many cards), shift to more mid/high cost cards and avoid over-flooding cheap cards.
Using Cards That Interact with Locations
Some cards have effects that let you counter or take advantage of Location effects:
- Uatu The Watcher: Lets you see unrevealed locations early enough to commit properly.
- Scarlet Witch: Changes the location when placed. Useful to dodge bad locations or shift the situation.
- Quake: Shuffles locations when played in middle spot — good for correcting bad Location layouts.
Planning Your Turn-By-Turn Based on Reveals
- Don’t overcommit to Locations before they’re revealed. Some Locations might force your hand or shut down your strategy.
- Having flexibility in your deck helps — include cards that are good in many types of Locations rather than those that only shine in very specialized ones.
Key Locations Players Should Know & How to Handle Them
Here are a few examples of Locations that often cause problems for players, and how to respond:
| Location | Effect |
|---|---|
| The Big House – blocks high-cost cards (4-6) | Avoid relying on expensive finishers; include mid range cards and make sure your curve isn’t all high cost. |
| Atlantis – if you only have one card there, it gets +5 Power | Sometimes commit exactly one card to get that bonus; don’t overfill. |
| Baxter Building – If you’re winning at Baxter, it gives +3 power to your other locations | Try to contest Baxter even if it’s a loss in power initially, because winning it yields broader benefits. |
| Sokovia – Discard a card from each player’s hand when revealed | Include cards less dependent on your hand, or cards that trigger discard effects to benefit. |
Final Thoughts
Marvel Snap’s Location system adds huge strategic depth. Knowing how and when Locations reveal, being ready for Featured/Hot Locations, and including cards that can counter or exploit difficult Locations will give you a strong edge. Flexibility matters — the best decks are those that can perform under many Location combos, or that include tech for handling the bad ones. Put in the work to understand Locations, and you’ll win more often and with less frustration.
